What is manual osteopathy?

Manual osteopathy is a hands on treatment that looks at the body as a complete unit of function. It seeks to restore body function by removing any restrictions. Your practitioner assesses how your whole body is functioning from the muscles and connective tissues all the way down to the circulation and joints. It is done with gentle manual techniques.

When do people try manual osteopathy?

  • Persistent pain, including pain that has not settled with treatment aimed at the painful area
  • Problems that ease for a while and then come back
  • Stiffness or restricted movement that gets in the way day to day
  • Restrictions in the internal body (digestion, elimination, circulation, etc.)

Many people try other care before booking osteopathic treatment. If that is you, tell your practitioner what you have tried and what did or did not help.

What happens at your first visit?

Your first appointment is an assessment and treatment. Your practitioner takes a detailed history, assesses how your whole body is moving and begins hands-on treatment in the same visit. Follow-up visits build on what that assessment found. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in.

Our osteopathic manual practitioners work in the same clinic as our chiropractors and registered massage therapist, so you can combine treatments without going elsewhere.

Common questions

Is an osteopathic manual practitioner a doctor?

No. In Ontario, osteopathic manual practitioners are trained in manual osteopathy. They are not physicians, and the profession is not regulated by a provincial college. Treatment is hands-on manual therapy. Both of our practitioners, Andrew Johnson and Mindy Willis, graduated from the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy, and Andrew is a member of the Ontario Osteopathic Association.

Is osteopathic treatment covered by insurance?

Many extended health plans include coverage for osteopathic treatment. Check the details of your plan, and our reception team can help you confirm coverage before your first visit.

How is it different from chiropractic or massage?

The three overlap but start from different places. Chiropractic focuses on the spine and joints, massage therapy on muscles and soft tissue, and osteopathic treatment on how the whole body moves and works together. If you are not sure which to book, call the clinic and we will help you choose.
